Thoughts From Pastor Brett...
"Starting To Stop"
If you are like me, you have little problem dreaming of new ideas and plans. As the new year dawns, most of us reach forward with ease, into the grand goals we aspire to finally grasp. We will start eating better. We will begin to pray more. We will initiate our journey toward the family, finances, or faith that we have always wanted. Dreaming of a new start is inspiring and common. It is also Biblical.
2 Corinthians 5:17 - "If any man be in Christ he is a NEW creation."
Revelation 21:5 - "Behold, I make all things NEW."
The ministry of Christ extends beyond our present circumstances and promises us a new day. A better day; a better way. In His own sovereignty, Jesus imparts to us an innate desire to dream of new starts and fresh beginnings. He also offers us the power to turn dreams into reality. In Christ, this year can indeed be something new for you. There can be a new level of faith. A new degree of prayer can arise. New opportunities can be presented.
Yet, how do we move from the dreaming to the living? Many have reached a place where new resolutions are nothing more than fanciful ideas. They have seen them come and go, without fruition, so many times that the faith to see the materialize is all but gone. That does not have to be the case. Christ promises the new - for real... for reality! To walk into that promise, we must remember the promise that comes along with it. The promise to start comes with the promise to stop. One of the greatest difficulties I face with any new year, is the conclusion of the old one. As late as March, I will still be placing the old year on my dates. I lived for 12 months in that year and it is hard to break the routine and cycle of still begin in it. I have to train myself to stop ascribing attention to the past & to begin living in the future.
The same is true in our lives. Christ says that in him all things are new. But, in what context does He say it: 2 Corinthinas 5:17, "If any man be in Christ, he is a NEW creation. OLD things have passed away. All things have become NEW."
The new is promised to start, when the old is stopped. The greatest key to starting something new is to many times stop something old. As we dream of new beginnings and fresh starts this year, let us evaluate what we may need to stop in order to see our dreams start.
You may need to STOP LETTING YOUR PAST CONTROL YOU.
Maybe your yesterday is not a glowing picture of warmth. It may be filled with pain, scars and failures. You cannot change it, but in Christ is can be healed. You can let go of the past. You can move on. Make a choice this year to stop allowing what has been to dictate what will be.
You may need to STOP RUNNING SO FAST.
Maybe you are simply too busy. Too busy for family. Too swamped for God. Too cluttered in life to find the joy, hope, and peace of life. You think you cannot give up anything. Maybe you can. Perhaps you can stop a few things. Make choices this year to stop running wide open all the time. Slow down and enjoy some things.
You may need to STOP CONDEMING YOURSELF.
Maybe you have fallen more than you should. Perhaps you have failed on some big issues. You feel worthless. You have had your chance. You blew it. STOP! You are still God's creation. You are still filled with possibility and potential. Stop doing to yourself what God says He never does to you. He has not condemned you, He has picked you up and given you another chance.
You may need to STOP SETTLING.
Maybe you have said this is enough. The level of faith you have, the degree of God you experience, the ministry you have offered. You have settled. You do not have to settle any longer. Allow passion and hope to rise in you for more. Stop saying this is enough and uncover the drive within you to see and be all that God has for you.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOUR FAMILY
In 2012 - May the Lord bless you & keep you, may He cause His face to shine upon you, may He be gracious to you, & may He give you peace.
